netlab positions

The Netlab does not, at present, have funded positions.

The Network Architecture Lab of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation seeks applicants for its internship program in its Studio-X New York office on a rolling basis.

We are looking for interns unafraid to question the basic premises of architecture and to operate far beyond its boundaries, in territories more familiar to history, philosophy, economics, and religion. The Netlab is a research-based center aimed at understanding how digital technology, telecommunications, and changing social networks impact architecture, cities, and society. We do not design buildings.

Please see this Web site and our two books, Networked Publics ( and the Infrastructural City for more about us.

Please do not apply if you have not looked at these or are uninterested or methods of working.

Interns are expected to be self-starters and capable of independent work.

We regret that all internships at present are unpaid, we do, however, give you full credit on any work you do and we will not generally require you to put in work beyond normal hours, 10-5, Monday-Friday.

The internship is at Columbia University's STUDIO-X space on Varick Street in Soho. Please bring your own computers and software (e.g. CS4, CAD, Office). STUDIO-X is a Mac environment and Macs are preferred, but PCs are acceptable.

STUDIO-X is a collaborative office that brings together architects, theorists, graphic designers, media thinkers, artists, and landscape architects for collective projects in design and research.

Interns will work on directed research for upcoming Netlab publications.

Fluency in English is a must.

all interns are expected to be available for two months minimum.

Application to be submitted as a single PDF (8MB maximum) document including:

Applicants with questions may also submit queries via the contact form on this site.

All positions demand significant time and resources from the Netlab, thus they must be highly selective and any projects that applicants want to engage in must be in keeping with our mission.
